Euro NCAP tests gets tougher

Just read the latest Today, Euro NCAP crash test results for five new cars,viz., the Citroen Nemo, the Kia Venga, the Nissan Cube, the Seat Exeo and the Toyota Verso.

Only the Toyota Verso, receives Euro NCAP’s maximum five star rating.

This is due to the fact that Euro NCAP has raised the bar for carmakers to achieve five stars across three areas of safety protection:
Performance thresholds for Adult Occupant Protection - from 70% previously to 75%
Child Occupant Protection - 75% to 80%
Pedestrian Protection - from from 25% to 40%.

The Toyota Verso received good scores in all areas and an huge 69% in pedestrian protection.

Jaguar starts making money

Here's some good news from the UK auto industry. Jaguar Land Rover has announced a net profit of £55m (US$140.7 million)in the last three months of 2009. The profit came from increased sales (more than 165,000 models)outside the UK. The biggest markets were Russia, Europe, North America and China.

(Kantanka Obrempon I & II) Ghanian motors

The future of the African car is alive and well in Ghana. A Church leader called Apostle Kwadwo Safo is the inventor behind these two vehicles both named Kantanka Obrempon I & II, exhibited at his church's 27th Annual Charity & Technology Fair at Awoshie in Accra, Ghana.

The exhibition provided a lesson to the numerous teachers and students present that with determination, committed teachers and students could improvise with local materials.

Apostle Kwadwo Safo was born on 26th August 1948 at Bekwai in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. After basic school, he attended the Ghana Technical Works Institute in Kumasi. He thereafter had a three-year stint as a welder at the Volta Aluminum Company (VALCO), West African Metals and the French African Company. On the 3rd February, 1971 he founded his church, Kristo Asafo (Christ Reformed Church). Kristo Asafo is famous for its philanthropy and service to the needy in society since inception.

Top five safest cars of 2009

According to a press release from Euro NCAP, the top five safest cars of 2009 are as follows:

The VW Golf VI frontal impact test

1. VW Golf VI
2. Honda Insight
3. Toyota Prius
4. Hyundai i20
5. Toyota Avensis
5. Volvo XC60
5. Opel/Vauxhall Astra

This is based on their maximum five star award and their overall scores and was out of a total of 33 car models that were tested last year.

The VW Golf performed impressively in all four categories tested, namely, occupant protection of adults, protection of children, pedestrian protection and supporting safety and driver assistance systems.

It is interesting that two fuel-efficient vehicles, namely, the Honda Insight Hybrid and Toyota Prius, were placed second and third respectively.

On the other hand the Suzuki Alto and the Toyota Urban Cruiser, received three stars, Euro NCAP’s poorest results.

More problems for Toyota

According to reports the Toyota recall due to gas pedal problems could cost the company around US $2 billion. Apparenalty it was due to a software problem but this has definitely hurt consumer's trust in this car company.

The story does not end there. Just found out that the US authorities are launching an investigation regarding problems in the 2010 Toyota Prius as well.
